These provide one order of magnitude greater output than Phototransistors. They should be used where the distance between the light emitter and the light receiver is long, or where high output is needed. The response is slower than that of a photo transistor. The output rank width is also increased, so use caution. These are often used for detecting the start and end of, for example, video tapes.
